Natalia Vodianova & Michael Fassbender For Vogue

The sight of Michael Fassbender suited up and snuffing the life out of nazis in the movie X-Men First Class was an absolute re-ignition of my fascination with the 60s. I was immensely pleased with the movie even before it got to the middle of the plot, just because of the styling of the outfits and setting of the movie. While I do believe a worthwhile movie has a compelling good story-line and stunning visuals,  I always feel that a movie is still first and foremost a visual treat. So, if the story-line is going to be less than impressive then it has to at least be intriguing to the eye. Fortunately for me, the X-Men First Class had both!

I think that Michael Fassbender does add to the visual treat of the movie as he does have a suave but yet has an intense aura underneath. It only seems natural that it is applied into this editorial and resulting with a theatrical quality to it. The outfits worn by the exquisite Natalia Vodianova befits a futuristic utopian that does bear contemplation of the 1920s which is something I seem to favor of recent - the imagined future of the generations before. On the point of shoes though, there seem to be features of boots with form extensions that are simple but are amazing. Pay extra attention to the Balenciaga and Givenchy boots.

Cut & Paste The 60s Groupie

I have an imagined nostalgia towards the 60s.

Imagined nostalgia because that's the only thing an individual born way after that decade can do. In this imagined nostalgia, is content curated through available means like pictorial books depicting the lifestyle of the 60s, second hand experiences from the parents, retro movies, etc. So yes, I may have a theatrical view of it but leave it be!

The retro groupie.

Now, cue in four smartly dressed blokes from Liverpool singing "Can't Buy Me Love" to a legion of screaming fans who are craving for just a look from one of their idols. That is the exact emotion this editorials intends to channel through model, Tati Cotliar. And she delivers it well by posing in modern designer pieces alongside the retro photos of other screaming music fans. The black & white setting of the editorial allows the focus to be on the details of the outfit and also on the emotions portrayed by Tati Cotliar. But most importantly, it gives a real stillness or suspension of time within the photos.

Chanel's LBJ No.1

The Little Black Jacket

by

Karl Lagerfeld & Carine Roitfeld

Iconic personalities + background story + classy photo shoot + publish book
=
A priceless/timeless piece of clothing?

I understand that they're trying to present it as the 'denim jeans' of jackets - versatile.

But, it sounds a lot like taking the denim jeans which was actually the man's staple clothing then redesigned to better suit the woman's frame then sold back to the man again. Except, Coco Chanel wore a very similar one...

Maybe I'm jumping the gun, as I've barely had enough information on this project. Personally, I wouldn't wear one though. Too feminine for my taste. But, it makes an ideal piece of clothing for the woman in my opinion. Business or pleasure.

Criticism aside, this collaboration project to revisit a classic Chanel piece by Karl Lagerfeld & Carine Roitfeld is absolutely classy/stunning with a star studded cast of Anna Wintour, Kanye West, Sarah Jessica Parker, Claudia Shiffer, Yoko Ono, etc. And those are just a few to name. Soon to be compiled into a book and released soon.

Round & Beautiful

While I agree most of the models in the fashion industry could use more flesh on their bodies, I do understand(but not completely sympathizing) the norm of using thin models. It's meant to create a distinct identity for fashion, as art/design seem to have an obligation to be incomprehensible or unreachable by the greater mass no? Because if it is easily accessible, it loses its exclusivity.

That's fine. The problem is when they are used as the epitome/benchmark of beauty for women and try starving themselves to achieve it.

So the real problem is impressionable minds?

It doesn't help when it seems to be constantly bombarded at you through everyday media though.

Diversity helps. Round or hanger-physique models. Which ever helps better deliver the vision of the show. Both are beautiful. As long she's healthy and happy.

After all, its all admiration when actors put themselves through 'dangerous diets' all in the dedication do they?

Eye Candy: Ahoy Seafood!

Staying in Kota Kinabalu allows one to discover small food establishments that attempt to be authentic.

I find that ambience completes the experience of an essential art we engage in - eating. It actually prepares the mind to properly experience/appreciate the flavors in the chosen dish.

So in this case, I found one, by the name of Sailors' Cafe that was decked to a naval/port theme. Of course, seafood is their speciality but I had lamb instead. There will always be another time after all.

End story? A satisfying experience.

The Branded Designer

i-D magazine covers always have their model's winking or emulating the 'i-D' logo. So here's how they did it with the man who always has his sunglasses on.

Karl Lagerfeld. Artist, designer & photographer.

From the sunglasses to the pony tail to the black-and-white suits. He has made an icon and a brand of himself literally.

Narcissistic? Doesn't matter because it's a brilliant marketing ploy.

That's what happens when one dedicates to creating their own style.

So much style that you can make coke bottles with one's self on it. Coke light to be exact.
